Caring for the Carer October 2020 (webinar event )

Complimentary member’s only live webinar event

Date: Friday 23rd October 2020

Title: Caring for the Carer (Managing Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma in Caring Professionals)

Presenter: Joanna Fortune

Joanna is an accredited psychotherapist specialising in trauma recovery and attachment repair work. She is author of the 3 book series for parents 15-Minute Parenting, hosts a podcast of the same name and is the weekly parenting consultant on Newstalk FM.

As practitioners and carers working with young people in care our aim is to help them to identify and better understand their own emotions so that they can make sense of the world and themselves in it while learning ways to safely express themselves. There are many challenges in this endeavour. Before a young person in care can self regulate like this, they must learn to co-regulate, which requires developing a trust based relationship with an available attachment figure. This interactive webinar will look at practical therapeutic techniques that support our own emotional regulation and wellbeing so that we can support those we are caring for to learn self-regulation with and through us. Joanna will talk us through the potential impact of working with an emotionally dysregulated population and why self-care needs to be more than a social media meme but an actual action plan we use daily in our work. She will model techniques that participants can take away and start using immediately.
